Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick Joins Coalition
With just 15 days left until Election Day, our coalition has reached 50 religious organizations and 192 coalition partners. The Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick recently voted unanimously to add their names to the Mainers United for Marriage list of religious institutions supporting marriage for ALL Maine families.
“The mood in the room when the motion carried unanimously was amazing. We were excited and very happy,” said the congregation's minister, the Reverend Sylvia Stocker.
Every member in Brunswick’s Unitarian Universalist congregation is eligible to vote since the congregation is governed democratically.
Stocker was not surprised the motion passed. “Three years ago we voted to take a public stand to support marriage equality when it appeared on the ballot then,” said Stocker. “Our commitment to supporting marriage equality was firm then, and it hasn’t wavered,” she continued.
The Brunswick congregation has a history and tradition of welcoming all people regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. They have organized an interfaith vigil to support the freedom to marry on Sunday, Oct. 28, from 5:30 to 6:00 on the Brunswick Green.
